Welcome to the Server Check Frequently Asked Questions!

We hope that the answers below address some of your questions, but if there’s something you still want to know or need to ask, get in touch with us!

General

Why is my parent monitor running so often when I have it set to run infrequently?

In Server Check 1.5.230821 we introduced a new “Time Until Parent Is Stale” setting.

This setting allows you to specify how long a parent monitor’s result is valid for, in the case of any of its child monitors. Before a child monitor is checked, it looks at its parent’s last result, and if this result has gone “stale” (i.e. is older than the number of seconds set in the “Time Until Parent Is Stale” setting), it will tell the parent to run again just before the child is run.

This means that a parent monitor can be set to run very infrequently, for example, every 15 minutes, but if it has any child monitors that run more frequently, the parent monitor might be run much more often so that its result is never “stale” before one of its child monitors runs.

These extra monitor checks still show in the parent as regular checks, and will appear in its charts etc. just as with normal results.

This setting is set to 60 seconds by default, to ensure that a parent monitor result is never too old, but the setting can be disabled entirely by setting “Time Until Parent Is Stale” to 0 (zero). With the setting disabled, any child monitors will be checked as normal, but the parent monitor won’t be re-checked first. The parent monitor will continue to be checked on its own regular cycle, independent of its child monitors.

Does Server Check run as a Windows service or can it be installed as a Windows service?

Server Check does not install itself as a Windows Service, and is not designed to be installed as a Windows Service.

Instead, Server Check can be set to run as the current user when Windows starts.

You can optionally use an “auto logon” utility, or simply remove the need to enter a password, if you want Windows to automatically log into your user account and show the Windows desktop automatically when it boots or restarts.

Will my analytics or site performance be affected by monitor checks?

Server Check monitors sites and servers by sending very small packets of data, which should not affect the performance of your systems in any way. Analytics will generally not be affected either, as most analytics mechanisms rely on loading javascript files and other website assets that Server Check does not request or require for its monitor checks.

Server Check monitor requests will probably be found in some of your website logs, but nowhere else.

Can I change the type of subscription I have?

Yes, you can add, cancel and change your subscription choices at any time.

To add a new subscription to your account, select the type of license and subscription frequency (monthly or annual), and place your order in the usual way. You will then find details of your new subscription and license key in your Server Check account.

To cancel an existing subscription, visit the “My Subscriptions” tab in your Server Check account, select the subscription you wish to cancel, and click the “Cancel” button.

To change an existing subscription to a different type, e.g. if you wish to change from a monthly subscription to an annual subscription, we recommend adding the new subscription type to your account first, and then cancelling the old subscription. You will receive a new license key for the new subscription type. Remember that the previous license key will continue to work for the remaining time left on the subscription linked to it, and for as long as payments continue to be made on that subscription if it is not cancelled.

What is the difference between the free 10-monitor version without a license and the free 10-monitor version with a license?

There are two versions of Server Check that are completely free to use.

The free unregistered version can be downloaded, installed and used forever without requiring a license. Up to 10 monitors can be added, but the monitor types are restricted to HTTP checks and Ping checks, and the minimum time between checks is five minutes. No SMS credits are included.

The free registered version removes the five minute limit on monitor checks, so checks can be made as frequently as every 10 seconds, and all monitor types are available in this version. A small number of SMS credits are included when you first register the free version.

I own a Server Check license. How can I upgrade it so that I can add more monitors?

If you already own a full Server Check license (not a subscription) and want to upgrade to add more monitors, you do not need to purchase the upgrade at its full cost. You simply need to pay the upgrade cost (see here) to move from one license to another. Please note that we do not offer license downgrades.

To make any changes, please get in touch via chat, email or telephone with the details of your license and upgrade request.

You can also change your subscription choices. If you want to move from a monthly subscription to an annual subscription or vice-versa, you can change your subscription options by visiting the “My Subscriptions” tab in your Server Check account. Payment for the new subscription type will not be taken until the current subscription period ends. For example, if you have a monthly subscription and change to an annual subscription, you will only be charged the full amount for the annual subscription when the monthly subscription period that you have already paid for comes to an end and the subscription renewal is due.

Does Server Check require internet access?

Yes, Server Check requires internet access to perform its core function, internet service monitoring. It also needs internet access to activate correctly and to periodically (usually once a day) keep your license valid and to check for software updates.

Licensing

Which IP addresses and domains does Server Check need access to and what about firewall security?

We strongly advise that your instance(s) of Server Check are secured with a firewall where possible.

Server Check requires internet access for our update and licensing services to operate correctly, however we recognise that your setup may require internet access to be restricted to certain IP addresses and/or domains.

Server Check update and licensing services operate on the following network addresses:

81.187.25.96/28
34.133.202.100

Please allow these addresses in your firewall along with your other trusted IP addresses.

If your firewall also restricts the domains that Server Check may contact, please ensure that it is able to access the following domains:

servercheck.co.uk
*.servercheck.co.uk
fearworksmedia.co.uk
*.fearworksmedia.co.uk

How do I activate Server Check if I use it within a local network only or if my firewall does not allow access to the internet?

Server Check requires internet access for license key activation, and also to periodically (usually once a day) keep your license key valid and to check for software updates.

If you use Server Check on a local network only, or if your firewall blocks the ports that Server Check uses for license activation and validity checks, an IT technician may need to grant internet access and turn off firewalls and virus protection on your computer or enter an exception for Server Check to allow internet access.

Can I activate my license key offline or away from my computer?

No, Server Check requires internet access in order to activate correctly, and then periodically (usually once a day) to keep your license valid and to check for software updates.

Server Check is designed to continually monitor internet services and check whether they are up or down, and so by design, internet access is required for both license activation and internet service monitoring, Server Check’s core task.

Therefore no offline activation option is available.

How can you guarantee that I will always be able to activate and verify my Server Check license?

All versions of Server Check activate the license key applied to them by contacting our activation servers, and will then periodically connect to our licensing servers (usually once a day) to keep your license valid. If the publishers of Server Check, for whatever reason, are unable to continue activating license keys, arrangements are in place for a final version of Server Check to be released which disables the license key activation system. This version will be available for digital download for a minimum of one year from the time when the publisher is no longer able to activate license keys. At this point, Server Check would move into the public domain and all copyrights would be removed.

In practice, this means that we can guarantee that you will be able to use Server Check even if the developer or publisher ceases trading, ceases to exist, changes business model, is declared bankrupt, enters administration, is liquidated, is dissolved, is sold, or if anything else unforeseen happens.

Will my license still be valid if I update Server Check?

Yes, Server Check licenses are valid for all versions of the software, and will be valid for all future updates.

How many times can I activate Server Check with my license key?

License keys can be used to activate Server Check on one computer, and each installation of Server Check requires a separate license key. If you need to transfer a license from one computer to another, please make a request via chat, email or telephone.

Can I use my license key on more than one computer?

Server Check licenses can only be used on one computer. If you need to transfer a license from one computer to another, please make a request via chat, email or telephone.

Can I move my Server Check license to another computer or system?

Each Server Check license allows the software to be used on one computer. Once a license is activated, only that computer will identify itself correctly for Server Check to run. You can transfer your license to another computer or system, but it will no longer allow the original system to use that license. To transfer your license, please request this via chat, email or telephone.

Security

Which IP addresses and domains does Server Check need access to and what about firewall security?

We strongly advise that your instance(s) of Server Check are secured with a firewall where possible.

Activation fails or Server Check won’t connect to certain servers

If you are experiencing issues with activating Server Check or getting Server Check to make a successful connection to some sites and servers, and yet connecting to other sites works perfectly, it is very likely that you are running an older legacy Windows operating system that does not (by default) use newer TLS protocols to make connections. Some sites and servers will still accept these connections, whilst other (more secure) sites will not.

Server Check uses the built-in SChannel component of Windows to communicate and connect. Some older versions of Windows, for example, Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2, do not enable TLS protocols by default and use older SSL protocols instead. We highly recommend upgrading your operating system to the latest version of Windows to benefit from the best security and compatibility with Server Check.

However, it is possible to enable more secure TLS protocols in Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 by following these steps:

Enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 on Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 at the SChannel component level

For TLS 1.1 and 1.2 to be enabled and negotiated on Windows 7/Server 2008 R2, you MUST create the “DisabledByDefault” entry in the appropriate subkey (Client) and set it to “0”. These subkeys will not be created in the registry by default, since these protocols are disabled by default.

Create the necessary subkeys for TLS 1.1 and 1.2; create the DisabledByDefault DWORD values and set it to 0 in the following locations:

For TLS 1.1

Registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.1\Client
DWORD name: DisabledByDefault
DWORD value: 0

For Server 2008 R2, create an extra DWORD value:

DWORD name: Enabled
DWORD value: 1

For TLS 1.2

Registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client
DWORD name: DisabledByDefault
DWORD value: 0

For Server 2008 R2, create an extra DWORD value:

DWORD name: Enabled
DWORD value: 1

Will my payment be secure?

Yes, our site is a secure site and is only available over a secure TLS-encrypted connection (sometimes still referred to as SSL, although this is an outdated technology and is no longer used by modern servers or browsers). You can check for the “https” or the padlock icon in your browser’s URL address bar.

Payment details are processed by one of our secure payment processors, a third party who specialise in processing online payments securely. The entire Server Check team never see your payment details and these are never stored on our systems. Subscriptions are also handled by our payment processors, and you can cancel a subscription at any time.

What information is sent to you and stored when I purchase or activate Server Check?

We only store information that you have provided when downloading, purchasing or activating Server Check, and if you ask us to erase this data then we will do so (please note that your license key would no longer work with Server Check).

Your information is stored on secure servers and is made up of the same information that you would submit when making most online purchases, such as your name, contact information, and products bought. A digital signature generated by your computer (containing no identifying information) is stored alongside your Server Check license key so that your software license activates correctly and continues to identify as valid.

We do not share this information with any third parties and it will not be used to contact you for any reason other than to offer software updates, special deals that we think you might like, and to manage your software licenses.

No payment information is stored by us. Your payment information is handled exclusively by our payment processors and we never see it, including for all of our subscription packages. When it is time to charge your payment card, we simply send this request to our payment processors who will then handle the secure processing of the payment.

SMS Credits

Can I use SMS alerts if I am using the free version of Server Check?

Yes, you can use SMS alerts with any version of Server Check.

SMS Credits can be purchased separately to a software license, and can be used in the free unregistered version, the free registered version and any of the paid versions.

You will receive a set amount of SMS Credits if you register or purchase a license for Server Check, and additional SMS Credits can be purchased here.

Can I use my SMS credits for more than one installation of Server Check?

Yes, while a unique license is required for every installation of Server Check, your SMS API details can be used across as many installations of Server Check as you like.

Each SMS message will use one SMS credit from your SMS Credit Balance.

What are the SMS credits I see in my account dashboard used for?

Server Check can send alerts to system administrators by SMS text so that they receive an instant notification whenever a service that is being monitored goes down. The system can also be configured to send recovery notices when services come back online and start responding to monitor checks after a period of downtime.

In order for Server Check to send these SMS alerts you will need to have SMS credits in your account, and you will need to insert the SMS API Key and SMS API Password into the SMS settings panel of Server Check. Each SMS message will use one SMS credit from your SMS Credit Balance.

Your SMS API details can be used across as many installations of Server Check as you like.
